Towards a network of Operational Marine Biology: the ANERIS project

Two-thirds of our Blue Planet is covered with seas and oceans with immeasurable significance to life on Earth. Oceans produce up to 80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere, regulate the climate of the entire Planet, provide livelihoods to millions of people, and serve as home to an astounding number of species. It’s our responsibility to protect and understand them. In our quest to do so, we turn to technology and the dedication of scientists, engineers and citizens. Together, they form the backbone of marine research, working to monitor, study and preserve our biodiversity while ensuring sustainable resource management.

Here is where ANERIS comes in; funded by the EU Horizon Programme, ANERIS project aims to develop the next generation of tools and scientific infrastructure for monitoring and observation of marine ecosystems that will empower scientists, engineers and citizens to participate and create a better future for our oceans and Planet. To do so, ANERIS will explore 4 case studies creating a total of 11 technologies within them in order to introduce the concept of Operational Marine Biology (OMB), close to real-time monitoring and observation of marine biodiversity, ecosystems indicators and genetic markers. Access to real-time data and  capacity for its rapid uptake and interpretation is pivotal for guiding effective management practices and timely interventions to ensure sustainable exploitation of marine resources and healthy ecosystems.

In this way, OMB empowers policy makers, researchers, industry, nature conservationists and the general public to be more informed and to make the right choices for our Blue Planet.
