Restoring EU coastal wetlands | The Curonian Lagoon
The Curonian Lagoon is a transnational lagoon shared between Lithuania and Russia Federation. It is a shallow waterbody with an average depth of 3.8 m. With a total area of ∼ 1,584 km², it is the largest coastal lagoon in Europe. The lagoon lies at the interface between the south-eastern Baltic Sea and the watershed of the Nemunas River. It’s an important breeding, wintering and passage site for thousands of waterbirds and migratory birds. More information here.
The Curonian Lagoon, selected as a Case Pilot by the RESTORE4Cs project, has been analysed for its hydrological characteristics, including water temperature, salinity, nutrient levels, and circulation patterns. Research also explores the potential impacts of climate change on the lagoon, such as sea level rise and changing weather patterns, to identify vulnerabilities and inform adaptation strategies.

About the project:
RESTORE4Cs is a Horizon Europe project evaluating the impact of wetland restoration on climate change mitigation and ecosystem services. It aims to create a digital platform to help stakeholders assess the costs and benefits of restoration efforts and promote sustainable management. The project also focuses on engaging communities and supporting EU policies to preserve the ecological and social value of wetlands.
RESTORE4Cs will assess the environmental and socio-economic impact of wetland restoration in six European coastal regions by analysing carbon storage, greenhouse gas exchange, and biodiversity.
