Tides of Balance | Documentary
Across Europe’s seas, communities, scientists and ecosystems are facing a shared and urgent reality: how to protect marine life in a rapidly changing world.
Tides of Balance follows scientists and coastal communities across Europe as they work to understand and respond to the forces reshaping marine ecosystems today. Set across three regions, the Tuscan Archipelago, the Arctic Northeast Atlantic, and Macaronesia, the film moves between distinct landscapes and cultures, revealing the particularities of each through the eyes of those who live them.
Through interviews, fieldwork and landscape imagery, the documentary explores critical issues such as the impact of climate change on fisheries, the pressures of tourism, and the delicate effort to reconcile conservation with economic needs. From shifting fisheries in the Arctic to the strain of tourism on Mediterranean and Atlantic islands, each chapter reveals the fragile balance between protecting the environment and sustaining local communities.
Tides of Balance offers a grounded perspective on the shared challenges facing Europe’s seas, and the collaborative efforts emerging to address them.
The documentary is produced within Marine SABRES, a European Union-funded research project bringing together 21 partners to restore marine biodiversity and support a sustainable blue economy by advancing the adoption of ecosystem-based management across Europe.
